Nouveaunoise
ShareHaving featured on records with the likes of Jape, gone on tour with Messiah J and The Expert and remixed Super Extra Bonus Party, Nouveaunoise have just released their fantastic debut album 'Paraphrase Accolade' to much acclaim.
After a successful album launch party in Dublin's Academy 2, the electronica duo's debut long player was made July album of the month on Cathal Funge's Icon show on Phantom 105.2.
Scruffy talks to the Dublin based pair about the album, the Nouveaunoise live shows and that unique sound that is making a big impact on the Irish electro scene.
How did ye start making music individually and together?
Like most people as a young teenager with two tape-recorders. We’d record a guitar track to one tape, then play it back putting the drums down while recording to another tape-deck and repeating that process. The sound deteriorated hugely each time. It was great craic. By the time we’d met we had moved on to the more sophisticated world of recording to the computer.
What influences ye in your work?
Every now and then an amazing album comes along that we get obsessed with and turns what we do on its head. This year we’ve discovered four or five that have done just that. Right now we are working on a new EP that reflects this.
How was the album recording process?
It took a while because we were doing other things in our lives. But when we actually set out to put down the record and release it, it was natural enough for us. Some of the songs on Paraphrase Accolade are nearly four years old, but our knowledge of mixing is so much greater now that we were able to make them sound as we’ve always wanted.
Did ye put out the album indepently?
Yes. But we won’t do that again.
How was the launch party?
Fantastic. We live in a bit of a half-way-house here on Pearse Street and the launch was like a reunion of all our mates. They gave it socks. People were getting turned away on the door because the place was so packed. Our support act, The Bull Munro fired up the crowd so well that by the time we walked on stage we were deafened by the screaming before we’d even played the first note. It went so well that we’re going to do one more Dublin show before we leave in September.
How did the collaborations with Super Extra Bonus Party and Messiah J and the Expert come about?
The Bonus Party are responsible of taking us out of our house and playing our first gigs. We weren’t so concerned with getting our music out there until we met them. They helped us loads with that, and then invited us to do a remix of their song Propeller which appeared alongside Cadence Weapon and Jape on a limited edition blue vinyl. That was cool. Messiah J and the Expert are legends too, and supporting them was incredible.
Your music has a warmth and organic sound not generally associated with electronic music, Where does this sound come from?
Beautiful Teac four-tracks! Ha. They are just the sounds we went for on this album. We are influenced by the likes of Boards of Canada and Caribou. Plus we’re warm people.
What are the nouveaunoise live gigs like?
Bangin’! Drums, synths, trumpet, samplers, effects.... two or three mentalers running around the place....
How is your sound received by audiences?
Through the sound system! We always get an amazing reaction from audiences, which is nice.
The artwork seems to fit the mood of the music ye make. Who does the artwork? Did ye have an influence?
Conor does the artwork. We’re huge fans of vinyl covers and the Blue Note covers from late fifties / early sixties are what bespeak cool to us.
Whats next for Nouveaunoise?
We’re not allowed say. But it’s onwards and upwards.
