Harrows of Dublin

Within a matter of months after forming in early 2008, energetic Dublin 5 piece, Harrows had recorded top quality demos, "Told" and "Leave Again" and made their live debut at Whelan's, which resulted in the young band winning the Dublin round of the 2FM battle of the bands.

The quality of their demo produced by Liam Mulvaney in Asylum Studios, has opened a lot of doors in terms of getting gigs. The band were playing live very quickly after forming, which they say was a conscious decision as they were dying to get out playing after recording the material. The gigs couldn't be going better for the band.

"With each gig we're getting tighter on stage and more comfortable which is cool," says guitarist Alan Duggan. "We've played with some cool bands aswell like Offshore, Neon Stars, Matt Lane, Little Green Cars and we'll be playing with Bravado in March. We've also been giging in spots like The Button Factory, The Village, Whelans, Eamon Dorans and Radio City."

The live gigs are gaining a big fanbase around the city with their MySpace profile receiving large volumes of traffic and the songs getting up to 200 plays the day after a gig. In fact the internet has played a large role in Harrows short lifespan so far. Infact they see it as an important tool for promotion.

"Pretty much all of our gigs have came through Myspace and Bebo. It's also great publicity for our tracks and videos. Some of our videos have been played over 10,000 times on Bebo and it makes gettin your name out there alot easier." The band has also received some support locally from The Fingal Independent newspaper, which has featured them a number of times.

With 5 members the musical influences range from Sonic Youth and The Stereophonics to The Dandy Warhols and Bob Dylan. As well as The Pixies, The Strokes and Broken Social Scene.

And what influences Harrows when writing? "Anything really. Things you see on buses, stories you've heard and the bands that we would be listening to at the time. I started playing guitar after the first time I heard Rodrigo Y Gabriela and Kev claims that YouTube is an influence for his life," says Alan.

Harrows feel that these are exciting times to be a young band in Dublin. With numerous quality bands gigging around the capital and lots of support for new acts. "It's really good. There's loads of proper good bands around Dublin at the moment like The Parks, Distractors, Sickboy, Bravado, and so on and that would just be from the Indie scene. There's loads of really good punk rock, metal and hardcore bands around too. Theres also a lot of promotional compaines like Gigsmart that give bands the oppurtunity to play in sweet venues with really good acts."

Harrows aren't worried about the downturn in record sales as the download market will probably just take over. And if the future just means solely playing gigs they don't see a bad side. "Sure gigging is the craic."

And what are the plans for Harrows for the future? "We're booked to record four new tracks in Pulse and Asylum Studios before the summer. And in the summer we plan to play loads of gigs in Dublin and possibly a few outside of Dublin. Hopefully gonna try do an Ep launch sometime next year too."
