GMC - Girl On Facebook

Share

Cork rapper / producer GMC got into rapping and hip hop at a young age, writing rhymes as a young lad aged 10. He began writing about silly stuff he says, "I was rapping about mad stuff like, getting haircuts and stuff like that."

"Growing up I was mad into the Beastie Boys. I Started out making and recording beats on the drums and when we got our first PC I started making songs using the Hip Hop Ejay program. It was a simple cut and paste, beats and loops program but it led onto getting better software and making proper tunes." He started doing gigs at teenage discos around town with fellow Cork rappers Bony and Jaae.

His new album 'Shiny Filth' is completely independent and GMC does everything on it. Producing, Rapping, right down to doing the graphic design on the cd. "I was really focused on finishing the album for the last year. I really paid attention to the production. I wanted to make real songs with catchy hooks. Not just looped beats with a verse and a chorus. Its not just standard hip hop either, It has elements of Grime, Break-beat, House. The music genres are melding together these days anyway. I heard that Britney Spears has, Dubstep producer Rusko producing her album, and while some people might see that as selling out, I don’t. I think its actually pretty cool."

With influences like Dr Dre as well as British producers Chase & Status, Sub Focus and Dj Muggs. As well as being impressed by Cork based producer Ian Ring who he says is making good house and hip hop and is producing Bony's album at the moment. He brings an eclectic attitude to production.

'Shiny Filth' is available in HMV stores around the country thanks to inititive that he has shown in securing a distribution deal. When he brought out his first album "Diggin' A Hole," a friend working in the industry showed him the ropes of how to go about securing distribution. His single "Not Tonight (The Bouncer Song)" got to number 12 in the Irish charts and was a huge hit down in Cork. Sorting out a deal with Indi Entertainment, Ireland's independent distribution company and online distribution gives the rapper / producer an air of professionalism. You get the impression that he means business.

He actually prefers direct distribution however, "The days of getting signed by a major label and them taking care of the rest are gone now anyway. With the internet the way it is now you can do it all yourself," says the rapper. "Its more immediate. You can just ring up the record store directly and supply them with new cd's if they're running low. I want to help out the independent shops too anyway."

The attention to detail GMC shows in all aspects of production on the album was evident in the video for the single 'Girl On Facebook.' He did the storyboarding and graphics for the video which is inspired by a psychotic, stalker ex girlfriend. "There can be a lot of nutters out there on the internet," laughs the rapper.

The video produced by Scannán Productions is top quality. He knew what he wanted to achieve with it and he pulled it off really well. The bold graphics and simple animation are really effective. They fit the mood and the tone of the song perfectly. It might seem simple but its hard to do something simple really well.

The girls in the video are from a local dance crew who came in and auditioned. It was after a long day of filming but it must not have been too much like hard work auditioning all the girls.

Red FM have been really supportive over the years. The radio station approached him a few years ago to make a tune for the Cork team in the run up to the All Ireland final. The tune "Give Us Sam Back" was absolutely massive down in the Rebel County. When Cork won, GMC was asked to perform the song at the homecoming in front of 40, 000 people.

At the moment he is busy doing rap / hip hop workshops in schools and youth groups around Cork city. Making beats and writing ryhmes with the youngsters. Something that that he finds a really rewarding and quite an amusing experience. "I get them to write songs about where they're from. Its really funny. You get them slagging their teachers in rhymes and even challenging me to battles."
